Kurigram is the northernmost district of Bangladesh, bordered on three sides by India and intersected by numerous rivers, with the Brahmaputra being the most prominent. Various events are unfolding constantly in this region. Below is a summary of the latest news.

1. BGB Recovers 2,000 Yaba Tablets in Bhurungamari

On Saturday, March 15, the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) recovered 1,995 Yaba tablets at the Bhurungamari border. The seizure took place around 5:00 PM in the Anandabazar area of Maidam village, Pathardubi Union.

Acting on a tip-off, a specialized team led by Diadanga BGB Camp Commander Bayezid attempted to stop a suspicious motorcycle near Maidam College. Noticing the BGB’s presence, the smugglers fled, leaving behind the motorcycle and the drugs. BGB officials stated that anti-drug drives are being intensified along the border to prevent the smuggling of narcotics and illegal weapons.

2. Massive Turnout at Janaza of Former Nageshwari Mayor Alhaj Abdur Rahman Mia

Alhaj Abdur Rahman Mia, a two-time former mayor of Nageshwari Municipality and a prominent politician, has passed away. He breathed his last early Saturday (March 15) while being transported from Rangpur to Dhaka for advanced treatment. He was 68.

He is survived by his wife, two sons, two daughters, and numerous well-wishers. Rahman Mia served as the President of the Nageshwari Upazila Jatiya Party for a long time and was known as a popular leader. His funeral prayer (Janaza) was held at the Nageshwari Dayamoyee Pilot Academy football ground, attended by people from all walks of life.

3. Iftar Party Organized by Youth at ‘Kopaler Char’ in Nageshwari

On Friday, March 14, the youth of Bamandanga Union, specifically members of the “Bamandanga Blood Group,” organized an Iftar Mahfil at a place called Kopaler Char. The event was led by Dr. Mainul Haque, an entrepreneur from Shohor Pharmacy.

Bamandanga is known as a river-erosion-prone area where many people live in poverty. Dr. Mainul named this specific silt island “Kopaler Char” (The Island of Fate) because of its desolate nature—it often remains uncultivated and submerged. This year, as the land rose above water, the youth crossed the river to hold the Iftar, which included Biryani and traditional items.

4. BGB Provides Financial Assistance to Felani’s Father

BGB has extended support to the family of Felani, the teenage girl who was killed by the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) years ago at the Nakharganj border. For the upcoming Eid, BGB purchased over 50,000 BDT worth of goods for her father’s shop.

On Friday, March 15, Lt. Col. Shah Md. Shakil Alam, commander of the 15th BGB Battalion in Lalmonirhat, handed over the goods at Nakharganj Bazar. He reiterated that BGB has stood by the family since the tragedy, assisting with legal battles in India and previously setting up a shop for Felani’s father to help sustain the family.

5. Chhatra League Leader Arrested in Kurigram

The Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested Saddam Hossain Noyon (35), the General Secretary of the now-banned Kurigram District Chhatra League. He was apprehended on Wednesday, March 19, from the Jahaj Company area in Rangpur.

DB Inspector Md. Bozlar Rahman confirmed the arrest, stating that Noyon is an accused in several cases, including the murder of student Ashiq Ahmed during the anti-discrimination student movement. He was produced before a Kurigram court on Thursday for remand and interrogation.

Local residents in Nageshwari seized approximately 3.88 metric tons of VGF (Vulnerable Group Feeding) rice from a room at the Keramatia Hafezia Madrasa in Kaliganj Union. The rice, intended as an Eid gift for the poor, was allegedly being hoarded illegally.

Following a tip-off on Saturday, March 22, an executive magistrate conducted a mobile court drive and recovered the rice. While no arrests were made on the spot, Nageshwari Police Station OC Rezaul Karim stated that legal action would be taken once a formal complaint is filed.

8. Unidentified Body Recovered from Cornfield in Phulbari
